Over the past year or so I've been making a list of the things I've learned, the kind of lessons I'd definitely pass on to my children. A previous version made it here a while ago, but here's a longer one:
Life Lessons:
1) Life always goes on. No matter what happens. It always goes on.
2) Life goes on a lot easier and smoother when you're not stupid. Don't be stupid. That said, sometimes being stupid leads to great stories, so this should maybe read "use your stupidity judiciously."
3) Learn when it's about you. 90% of the time, the things that upset you are not about you. Your friend snapped at you? Probably not about you. Death glare from the cashier in the grocery store? Definitely not about you. Learning this will give you the ability to stop worrying about 90% of things. Correlary: other people's insecurity is not your problem. This solves 90% of mean girl behavior.
4) When it is about you, own your shit. You forgot to call? Apologize. You tend to get jealous? Say that up front. Your insecurities are not anyone else's problem but your own.
5) Different does not mean better. It means different. This applies to people, behavior, taste in music/literature/movies/food/etc, places, and nearly everything. Different is not better. It's just different.
